Live Theatres across Canada were lit in red on September 22, 2020 as a reminder of what has been lost. No live theatre productions means that many people are unemployed: creative teams (writers, directors, choreographers, musical directors), cast members (actors, singers, dancers), musicians, crew members (designers and technicians in lighting and sound), costume designers and creators, stage managers, and more, not to mention all the office workers, ticket sales, box office, promotion, websites, and on and on. Then think of all the spin-off businesses – restaurants, pubs, shops, accommodations.
These theatres have been closed since March with no re-opening in the foreseeable future. So here are just a few of my favourite places in red – I have been in the audience in all these theatres. Well, except for the new Tom Patterson Theatre in Stratford. Few people have been inside it as yet. But I have enjoyed many productions in the old Tom Patterson.
Thank you to all the staff members at these various theatres who took the photos and posted them online. (If you’d like a photo credit, please contact me, and I would be pleased to add it.) If anyone has a photo of a theatre in red that I can add here, please send it along.
