Fresh off her star-making turn on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 11, the larger-than-life drag queen with endless charisma and a heart of gold, Nina West, will be on stage in a Toronto variety show June 13, as part of the city’s Pride Month celebrations. Not only was Nina the fan favourite on Drag Race, she was voted “Miss Congeniality” on the season finale. Nina describes her style as “colourful, campy and comedic” which has made her wildly popular.
The Toronto variety show, Drag Up Your Pride! will be at The Opera House (735 Queen Street East) and includes Toronto drag sensation Tynomi Banks and the ever-popular Wannabe, a Spice Girls Tribute. Drag Up Your Pride is produced by VarVerra Entertainment, under the direction of Thomas Alderson and Lucas Meeuse.
Nina West is known for doing everything on a large scale; the Drag Race judges loved her over-the-top performances, razor-sharp wit, and unmatched comedy chops. “The kind of queen I am … is big, classy, campy drag,” Nina says. She has been well respected in the drag community across America and in her home town of Columbus, Ohio for many years, not only for her extraordinary talent, but also her generous support of LGBTQ charities and community work. “Nina is ready to spread her joy to the city of Toronto!” says Alderson.
Tynomi Banks describes herself as a supermodel mixed with the fire of Beyoncé. She is featured in the second season of Canada’s a Drag, but was well-known in the Toronto drag scene long before the CBC series. “Toronto audiences know Tynomi Banks always turns the party,” adds Meeuse.
The popular Spice Girls tribute group, Wannabe, has been entertaining across North America for seven years. The Toronto based “girl-power” group takes their fans back to the Spice Girls’ heyday of the late 1990s. Complete with live vocals and choreography, they’re billed as a throw-back dance party.
Alderson and Meeuse will emcee the event. “With Pride Month here, we are so excited to be able to spread the joy and offer Toronto a night to celebrate,” says Alderson. “We are proud to be a Pride Toronto 2019 Community Event and we want Toronto to kick off its Pride festivities with a bang,” Meeuse adds, “and this is the Pride party you don’t want to miss!” VarVerra Entertainment says you will laugh and dance the night away with this amazing line-up of incredible talent.
