Mary’s Picks: What you can still see this summer…

ETT smallIf you’re feeling sad (as I am) that the summer is wrapping up and some of the area theatres will soon be closing for the season, here’s my list of favourites that you can still see!

You better hurry & call for tickets today –

In Grand Bend:

  • Mamma Mia! at Huron Country Playhouse – gotta love those Abba tunes and the amazing Blythe Wilson’s performance, until September 3
  • Aladdin ~ The Panto – take the kids or grandkids, they’ll love it, at Playhouse II in until September 3
  • While you’re in Grand Bend, eat out at Pizza Delight, The Sandbar Grill or Oakwood Resort

In Petrolia:

  • Around the Piano at Victoria Playhouse, a show-tunes crowd-pleaser until September 1
  • Men of Country, coming soon at VPP will be an audience favourite, September 7 to 25.
  • While you’re in Petrolia, enjoy lunch or dinner at Streets Eatery

In Blyth:

  • The Last Donnelly Standing at the Blyth Festival – we all remain fascinated by the Donnelly story, until September 2

In Port Stanley:

  • The Birds and The Bees at the Port Stanley Festival – hilarious comedy for the older, rural crowd, until September 3.

Or travel to Niagara-on-the-Lake – here are my favourites at the Shaw Festival:

  • “Master Harold”…and the Boys – a gut wrenching drama on racism, until September 10
  • Sweeny Todd – for those who love bloody musicals and dark humour, until October 1
  • Uncle Vanya – heart breaking dysfunctional family story, until September 11

Or head over to Stratford; many of the hits on their stage have been extended:

  • All My Sons – a gripping production of another dysfunctional family, until October 2
  • MacBeth – for a riveting version of Shakespeare’s Scottish play, extended to November 5
  • A Chorus Line – an inside look at a dancer’s life, some of them sad, until October 30
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – for amazing costumes and magic, extended to November 13

For something completely different, go to The Walper Hotel in downtown Kitchener:

  • The Ruse – With magician David Storm, an amazing mind-reader who will blow your mind, every Saturday night
