In Petrolia visit The Cottage ~
Something to Eat & A Place to Stay

The Victoria Playhouse in Petrolia is attracting theatre-goers from across the province with their popular line-up of musical revues and comedies.  The top-quality entertainment is worth the trip to Petrolia and while you’re there, you’ll be looking for something to eat and a place to stay.

The Cottage is Petrolia’s one-of-a-kind premium coffee shop.  Friendly staff will offer you dripped coffee, pour-overs, espresso, cappuccino, caffè latte, chai tea, iced drinks, blended drinks and more.

The business was opened by David Rogers and David Hogan, the co-artistic directors of Victoria Playhouse.  Jeremy and Rebecca Wilcocks managed The Cottage at its inception, later taking over the ownership.  “We have a wide variety of baked goods, with our date squares being the most popular,” Jeremy says.  The selection of sweet treats attracts many customers inside the door, with the delicious aroma of fresh baking.

Specialty chocolate is also popular at The Cottage.  A personal favourite is Chocolate Barr’s Mint Smoothies from Stratford.  Barr’s makes the rich, smooth, mint-flavoured chocolates following the tradition of Rheo Thompson.

Salads, soups and sandwiches are the staples on the menu.  “Our gourmet grilled-cheese is a best seller,” Jeremy says.  The breakfast sandwich – eggs, bacon and tomato on a bagel – is a favourite of Petrolia-ites and tourists alike.

The Cottage serves wines from area wineries, including Dark Horse in Grand Bend, Alton Farms near Forest, and Pelee Island. In addition, they have a variety of local craft beer.

Set in a fully refreshed storefront on Petrolia’s main street (4190 Petrolia Line), The Cottage has a homey and cozy atmosphere.  There are tables for those who want to stay, while take-out is readily available, too.  Shelves are lined with treats and goodies, and interesting rustic décor items for shoppers to browse.

If you plan to spend a few days in the Petrolia area, consider the two suites available in the upper level at The Cottage.  One suite offers a king-sized bed with a kitchenette, while the other suite has two queen beds, a full kitchen, and laundry. Both units have wifi and cable. They are clean, fresh and bright, receiving excellent reviews on Airbnb.

A beautiful town, still offering the grace of the Victorian era, Petrolia has a rich heritage.  The world’s first commercial oil well was established in the Petrolia area in 1858.  Still visible on Petrolia’s streets are the glorious mansions, built during the great oil rush when money was flowing, along with the oil, which sometimes literally poured onto the streets.  Just down the road in Oil Springs, you can visit the Oil Museum of Canada and learn about the area’s “Hard Oilers”, the pioneers of the oil industry who travelled the world teaching others how to extract that ‘black gold’ from the ground.

Petrolia is just a short drive to beautiful Lake Huron Beaches – you can explore the shoreline from Sarnia to Grand Bend, spending an afternoon sunbathing and swimming.

The Cottage’s Hours are:
7:00 to 7:00 Weekdays
9:00 to 7:00 Saturday
9:00 to 3:00 Sundays
When there is an evening performance at Victoria Playhouse, The Cottage will stay open until the show starts at 8:00 p.m.
